- <p> DIED. BARON MARCEL BICH, 79, father of the Bic pen and other
- disposable yet classic examples of modern design; in Paris.
- The throwaway society may be anathema to environmentalists,
- but catering to it made millions for Bich. He began his career
- as a fountain-pen salesman before inventing his breakthrough
- product in the early 1950s: a cheap, plastic pen (the h in Bich's
- name was apparently just as impermanent). The same use-it-and-lose-it
- philosophy created disposable razors and disposable lighters.
- Bich's most embarrassing flop: disposable perfume atomizers.
